40 pairs of black Trousers for all budgets

A good pair of wide leg black trousers can be so useful in your wardrobe. They can be dressed up and dressed down, can be worn to the office through to drinks and are flattering for all shapes and sizes. The great thing is, you can find a pair of black trousers in most stores so whatever your budget, there will most definitely be a pair for you.

If you are short waisted then opt for a mid rise style to avoid the trousers making your top half look even shorter. If you are long waisted, then mid rise or high waists work well. A high waist will help to balance out the legs and torso so it looks more even. If you’re unsure whether you have a short or a long waist, then check out my post here which will show you a quick and easy way to find out.

If you’re petite, then you can definitely still wear wide leg. Just avoid the really wide palazzo pant as they may drown you. Instead go for a gently wide leg that slightly flares. Cropped styles also help as showing a bit of ankle can help to elongate the leg. And look for mid to high waisted styled to help make your legs appear longer.

If you have a bit of a belly and big hips like me, then try to avoid anything too pleated at the front, instead opt for flat styles that have little to no detailing to detract away from the area. Likewise with pockets, keep it minimal around the hip area to avoid bulk.

I have quite short legs, so I like to keep my trousers long and wear with heels, this gives the illusion of longer legs. But I do also like to wear my wide trousers with trainers, so I have a few different pairs of trousers of differing lengths so that the length is just right whether i’m wearing a heel or a flat.

My most favourite trousers are from Cos (you can buy them here). They are a wool blend, have an adjustable waist and fit perfectly. They are a core part of the Cos collection now so if they haven’t got your size, they are sure to come back in stock. At £99 they’re not at the cheaper end of the scale, but they are beautifully made and will be in my wardrobe for years. I do believe that if you can afford it, paying a bit extra for a staple piece like this will be worth it in the long run.

I wear my black trousers year round. I have wool and flannel ones for winter and lyocell and linen ones in the summer. Whether you’re wearing a jumper or a blazer in the colder months or a vest/tee in the summer, then a pair of black trousers will always be a winner.

Below I’ve gathered 40 of my favourites to suit all budgets.
